If you’re looking for an Interjet review, look no further. You have come to the right place. There is so much to talk about this Mexican low-cost carrier.

Like everything, there are mixed reviews out there. Nothing is perfect nor will be. Some people say Interjet provides an excellent service, while others claim the opposite. Who says the truth?

In this review, I will try to be as objective as possible and provide you with information regarding my experience with this airline. If you’d like to know more, please continue reading.

Interjet is Mexico’s third-largest airline after Aeromexico and Volaris.

Travel Fares

Hand holding several 100-dollar bills.

Just like VivaAerobus and other airlines, Interjet has different travel fares for its customers. All travel fares include 2 pieces of carry-on baggage per customer (not to exceed 22 lbs total), snacks/drinks on board, web check-in and special assistance.

Interjet’s travel fares are:

Ultra Light

  • Most affordable fare
  • No checked baggage
  • No preferential boarding
  • No seat selection (service is extra)
  • Passenger/flight/itinerary changes are extra $

Light

  • Classic economy fare
  • 1 piece of checked baggage (55 lbs max) in Mexico and Latin America only
  • No preferential boarding
  • No seat selection (service is extra)
  • Passenger/flight/itinerary changes are extra $, although at a lower rate than the Ultra Light fare

Optima

  • More flexible than Ultra Light and Light fares
  • 1 piece of checked baggage (66 or 55 lbs max depending on your destination and including the U.S.)
  • No preferential boarding
  • Seat selection included from the 3rd row
  • Passenger/flight/itinerary changes are extra $ but at a considerably lower rate than the Light fare

Priority

  • No limits (or very few)
  • 2 pieces of checked baggage (up to 55 lbs each) regardless of the destination
  • Preferential boarding
  • 1st and 2nd-row seats
  • Free passenger/flight/itinerary changes

The Good

There are several good things we should point out. For instance:

  • As opposed to other low-cost carriers like VivaAerobus, you get more legroom. This is much appreciated for longer flights.
  • Seats are more comfortable.
  • Snacks, although simple, are included in any fare. Remember with VivaAerobus you have to pay for anything you want to eat or drink.
  • You get good value for your money.
  • Baggage allowances are more generous than VivaAerobus.
  • They cover more destinations than its low-cost competitor, especially in the south/southeast of Mexico.

The Bad

As will all things, there is also a bad side to it. Among some of them we could mention:

  • Not all planes have WiFi.
  • Baggage allowance policies differ significantly between destinations, especially between Mexico and the U.S., which can be confusing to its customers.
  • No first-class.
  • Internal instability which has resulted in several delays and cancellations.
  • Rudimentary baggage documentation where they manually inspect your suitcase. At least I’ve seen this happen in Campeche City. I cannot talk in general.
  • Customer service has room for improvement.

My Personal Experience

I’m amazed by the number of negative reviews I have come across regarding Interjet. On TripAdvisor alone, most reviews from travelers seem to be negative.

Honestly, in my experience, it has all been fine except for one occasion. However, it’s important to point out that one time I bought my tickets through Expedia. Since the transaction was not direct, the process to solve the situation took more time.

To make a long story short, they charged me double for a date change I made. I had paid Expedia, but then Interjet charged me again when checking in at the airport. Fortunately, after a couple of hours on the phone, I was able to solve this. There seemed to have been some miscommunication between Expedia and Interjet.

Other than that, my experience with Interjet has been nothing but pleasant. I have flown with them several times and everything has run smoothly. I haven’t had any problems when checking in. They didn’t have an online check-in before, but that is different now.

Man with a happy expression, wearing a red sweater and dark jeans and holding both of his fists in the air.

I also like the fact that even one of their economy fares includes checked baggage, within Mexico and Latin America that is. It’s a whole different story for flights between Mexico and the U.S. For the latter, you have to pay extra in some cases, $30 for the first suitcase I believe. Although in all honesty, this a common practice for international flights with other airlines.

2019 was a tough year for the Mexican airline. Disagreements between management and staff led to a strike for a few days which resulted in many flights being delayed or canceled. I have never faced a situation like that. I can understand the customers’ frustration and anger during those times, but at the same time, I can understand employees fighting for their rights. We have to be emphatic. This can happen with even the best airline in the world.

A thing that struck me as strange is that now and then I’ve seen lower prices from Aeromexico as compared to Interjet, when in theory Interjet should be cheaper. I guess it’s one of those things I will never understand.

I have yet to fly Interjet from the U.S., but within Mexico, I don’t have any real complaint. Overall, I give them a 9 out of 10.

Conclusion

I abide by the philosophy of taking everything you hear or read with a grain of salt. When I read so many bad things about Interjet, I still had my doubts. So I decided to try them once. And then I did a second time, a third time and so on. From experience, I can say it’s a good airline and I do recommend it.

On the other hand, I don’t doubt there may have been people who had bad experiences with them. I guess they just had bad luck or it was bad timing, I don’t know. Nothing is perfect in life.

Also, keep in mind that negative reviews have more resonance or impact among people. You may have noticed it already. Whenever we have a negative experience with something, we’re prone to write about it to warn others. Unfortunately, when we have a good experience, we don’t always let others know unless they ask us about it. Am I lying?

I hope to have cleared some doubts you may have had about this airline. If you still have any questions, please feel free to ask away. And if you’ve flown this airline and would like to share your experience, I’d love to read about it as well. See you soon!

October 2020 Edit: I do NOT recommend this airline anymore. There have been numerous problems with it. Experts believe it will declare bankruptcy anytime soon. You can learn more about what’s going on here.

December 2020 Edit: It finally happened. Interjet stopped operations after so much speculation.

December 2021 Edit: There are rumors about Interjet resuming operations in 2022. We will see what happens.

Book your trip now!

Book your flight

The first thing you have to do is find cheap flights. But where do you find those? There are many search engines, but the one I highly recommend is Skyscanner. Here you can compare fares from all over the world and pick the one that suits you best.

Book your accommodation

The next thing you have to do is secure your lodging. Whether you prefer a hostel, a guesthouse, a B&B, or a hotel, you can find them all on Booking. You can find lodging of all kinds ranging from cheap to expensive and somewhere in between. Many people have scored good deals using it.

Another popular option is Hostelworld. This website focuses on hostels as opposed to hotels.

Book a tour

In some places, you might want to hire a tour. Not all places are equally accessible to visit by oneself. It helps enormously when you visit with a local guide who can show you around and answer any questions you might have…all in your native language. My to-go place is Viator as they offer tours of all kinds and have a presence all over the world.

Rent a car

Public transportation is usually cheaper than renting a car, but it’s sometimes more complicated and time-consuming. That’s a reality. In some cases, it’s more convenient to rent a car. My recommendation is Rentalcars.com. Here you can compare rates and choose the one that fits you best.

Book your bus tickets

You can save money by booking bus tickets online. My favorite site to do this is Busbud.

Get travel insurance

Never travel without a travel insurance policy, especially these days! Travel insurance can save your life. My recommendations are World Nomads and Insured Nomads. Both companies cover COVID-19 related incidents, which is crucial these days.

12 Replies to “Interjet Review – Another Low-Cost Carrier”

  1. Wow! Good review. Although I have never used an interjet before, but based on your review I get an idea that the Interjet provides many facilities and benefits to its passengers. As a cheap travel fare with a spacious legroom.
Just now I also checked a few reviews on TripAdvisor. Indeed, I found a lot of negative reviews. However, I think it’s because the target market that is targeted is the lower middle class. Where people who are in the class “feel they have money” so the services provided to them must be like the “first class” service. So, that is normal.
However, speaking of flights, in my opinion the most important thing is the security of the aircraft. Why bothering about comfort or first class services, if it’s not safe
    What do you think?

    1. Hi, Kylie,

You made an interesting point. I’ve seen people wearing designer clothes and carrying luxurious handbags, but flying cheap. It doesn’t make any sense to me. They may have super high expectations, but they’re not willing to pay more. When they don’t receive what they’re expecting, they complain.

I think you get good value for what you pay. I’ve flown with them several times and I don’t have any complaints so far. I may have been lucky lol.

Yes, safety is very important. There are many aspects to consider when looking for flights and that is one of them.

      Thanks for commenting!

  2. Hello again, I really want to first appreciate your effort in putting this great website together and writing this article. I have never had problems with Interjet before, so I wonder where the negative reviews come from. Maybe I haven’t used it much enough. Your review is honest so thank you

    1. Hi, Benny,

I haven’t had a bad experience with them either. I guess we have been lucky.

      Thank you for dropping by.

  3. Wow Interjet is one of the best carriers not because it’s cheap but because of the fast response and the location of its headquarters makes it the best among its kind in the world. Thanks for this awesome articl. It would be of great help to the public as it has been of help to me.

    1. Hi, Feji ben,

I don’t doubt there are people who have had bad experiences with them, but personally it’s not my case. I do recommend flying with them.

      Thanks for dropping by.

  4. Hey, I found your review on Interjet is awesome and fair for everyone.  “I found there are mixed reviews out there. Nothing is perfect nor will be. Some people say Interjet provides an excellent service, while there are others who claim the opposite. As opposed to other low-cost carriers like VivaAerobus, we get more legroom. This is much appreciated for longer flights.” Keep this great work up.

    1. Hi, Deepanshi,

Glad to hear you found this useful.

Yes, there are mixed reviews about this airline. I had my doubts before trying them out for the first time. After flying with them several times, I don’t have any real complaints.

      Thanks for commenting.

  5. Going by the amount of negativity surrounding internet, I had formed a very bad notion about them before. Thankfully, you have explained further and broken it down to understandable pieces. Thanks for this. I’d start channeling the efforts to making it worthwhile hence by giving them a trial too possibly the next time I visit mexico. Thanks

    1. Hi, Rodarrick,

Yes, I was baffled by the amount of negative comments I came across when looking them up. I’m glad I decided to give them a try though. Online reviews can certainly help but can be misleading at times.

      Thanks for dropping by.

  6. Very good review Enrique,

I fly throughout Latin America a fair bit. I nearly flew Interjet last year out of Bogota Colombia to Miami Florida. The only two flights they had required a 15 hr and, I think a 6 hr. stop over in Mexico City. Which wouldn’t work with my plans.

I guess I am not qualified to comment on their flights, but from what you say in your review I would try them.  I normally fly Avainca from Colombia to the USA, but last time they left my luggage at Bogota, which created a few problems.

As a general comment Airlines aren’t doing enough to retain a loyal customers.

    Michael.

    1. Hi, Michael,

Yes, all airlines have their share of good and bad reviews. There are horror stories out there about the service they received, luggage being lost/stolen, etc.

I can only speak for myself when I say I haven’t experienced anything of the above. My experience with this airline has been nothing but pleasant.

I hope it goes well if you ever try them. Thanks for commenting.
